Stillbirth Research Alert Issue 2 November 2009
October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month and October 15th is IPIL (International Pregnancy and Infant Loss) Remembrance Day
IPIL Awareness month was founded almost 30 years ago by parents whose babies had died during pregnancy or in the early days or months after birth, and who wanted a way to acknowledge their babies. The day is an opportunity to gather together for comfort and hope, and to honour and remember all the millions of precious babies who die every year across the globe.
Over 9,000 babies worldwide are known to be stillborn every day, and many more die in early pregnancy. Thousands more deaths may go unrecorded and unrecognized. Additionally, every day around the world, 11,000 babies die within a month of their birth. All leave behind devastated families.
We hope this international day will raise awareness of the magnitude of loss, and help to improve understanding of the impact and significance of each death.
October 15th – Join us in the International Wave of Light honouring all babies who have died worldwide. For one hour, beginning at 7 pm your local time, light one or many candles indoors and outdoors and imagine 24 hours of people doing the same thing across the globe!
www.pregnancyandinfantloss.org is listing all the IPIL DAY events that are happening around the world. Please forward yours to the website.
You can add your own personal message honouring a special baby to the ISA World Circle of Loved and Remembered Babies.
